1 Jul
Summary
- State plans to list snakebite as a notified disease.
- Anti-snake venom kits will be distributed to health centers.
- Public awareness campaigns will reach the gram panchayat level.
Public health minister Prakash Abitkar announced on Wednesday that Maharashtra is set to bolster measures against snakebite fatalities. These efforts will focus on increasing public awareness, ensuring prompt medical treatment, and enhancing the availability of anti-snake venom.
The state government has decided to propose that snakebite be classified as a notified disease. This move aims to improve tracking and response mechanisms for snakebite incidents across the state.
To facilitate quicker diagnosis and treatment, anti-snake venom kits will be distributed to primary health centers. These kits will help medical staff quickly determine if a snakebite is venomous, guiding immediate treatment decisions.
Furthermore, comprehensive awareness campaigns are being conducted, reaching down to the gram panchayat level. The objective is to educate the public about the importance of reaching hospitals within the critical 'golden hours' following a bite, as fear can often lead to delayed treatment.
