The Maharashtra government has officially launched the State Palliative Care Programme, a significant initiative aimed at improving the lives of individuals facing chronic, life-limiting illnesses. This program ensures that dedicated beds will be made available in district, sub-district, and rural hospitals, alongside comprehensive palliative care services.
The scheme addresses the rising number of patients with conditions such as cancer, heart disease, and neurological disorders, many of which require continuous care rather than a cure. Palliative care focuses on enhancing the quality of life for these patients.
Implemented using funds from the National Health Mission, the program aligns with national guidelines and will offer services at all public health system levels. This includes outpatient and inpatient care, counseling, physiotherapy, and essential medications.
