Measles Surge: Maharashtra Sees 174% Case Spike
26 Feb
Summary
- Measles cases in Maharashtra surged by 174% in 2025, reaching 866.
- Low immunisation and delayed vaccinations are key drivers of outbreaks.
- Pune reports significant decline, nearing MR-free status by 2026.

In 2025, Maharashtra experienced a sharp rise in measles cases, escalating by 174% to 866, a significant increase from 316 in 2024. This resurgence follows a peak in 2023 and 2022, largely attributed to disruptions in routine vaccination during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite a decline in 2024, cases climbed again, highlighting ongoing vulnerabilities.
Rubella cases remained more consistent, with 231 reported in 2025. Across the state, 27 measles outbreaks and one rubella outbreak were recorded. Beed district reported the highest number of measles cases at 199, followed by Dhule and Greater Mumbai. Officials cited low immunization rates, delayed vaccinations, and migration as primary causes.
Health authorities previously intensified surveillance and vaccination drives, extending coverage to children up to 15 years in ashram schools and madrasas. A special campaign vaccinated over 4.44 lakh children. Experts emphasize that measles is not a mild illness and delayed vaccination leads to serious complications.
Meanwhile, Pune has reported a dramatic decrease in MR cases, achieving 99% coverage and aiming for MR-free status by 2026. The city recorded only two rubella and five measles cases in 2025.
