Maharashtra Girls Get HPV Vaccine for Cervical Cancer Defense

Maharashtra has initiated its Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination program, targeting adolescent girls aged 14 and under 15 to combat cervical cancer. This crucial public health measure aims to significantly reduce the burden of cervical cancer, the second most common cancer affecting women in India. The state has already received 9.50 lakh vaccine doses and has completed extensive training for its healthcare workforce.

The vaccination drive was expedited at the state's request, moving up from its originally planned schedule. Health Minister Prakash Abitkar emphasized the program's importance, especially given the substantial number of cervical cancer cases reported annually. The Gardasil vaccine will be provided free of charge at public health facilities.

While vaccination is a key preventive strategy, health officials also stress the continued need for screening and early detection among adult women. Cervical cancer remains a major public health challenge in India, with tens of thousands of deaths occurring each year. The national immunization program is expected to incorporate the HPV vaccine soon.
