26 Aug
Summary
- Maharashtra orders immediate safety audits for all hospitals.
- Newborns died in a fire at Amravati District Women's Hospital.
- Hospitals must appoint a nodal officer for fire safety.

In response to the recent deaths of three newborns in a fire at Amravati District Women's Hospital, the Maharashtra government has ordered an immediate and comprehensive audit of all government, private, and charitable hospitals statewide. The directive, issued on Tuesday, encompasses fire safety, electrical systems, building integrity, and hospital equipment.
Public health minister Prakash Abitkar stressed that the safety of every patient is the government's highest priority, warning that no negligence regarding fire safety will be tolerated. Inspections will scrutinize critical areas such as ICUs, NICUs, nurseries, and operation theatres.
The government also mandated that healthcare institutions conduct a fire-safety assessment every six months, involving physical inspections and corrective actions. Each hospital must appoint a nodal officer responsible for overseeing fire safety measures and submitting compliance reports.
Hospital heads will be held accountable for any incidents arising from delayed audits or significant safety lapses. The health department requires regular reports on safety assessments and compliance with national fire and life-safety guidelines, ensuring hospitals are genuinely prepared for emergencies.
