Maharashtra has been enduring a severe heatwave for the past two to three days, leading to 31 confirmed heatstroke cases and one suspected fatality between March 19 and April 19. High temperatures have affected various regions, with Amravati recording a peak of 43.4°C on April 20. At least 15 weather stations across the state reported temperatures between 40°C and 42°C.
The suspected death involved a 45-year-old farmer from Ahilyanagar district who collapsed while working in her field. While preliminary findings suggest heatstroke, an official committee is evaluating the exact cause. Akola has reported the highest number of cases with seven, followed by Nandurbar with five.
The Health Department has instructed local bodies to ensure hospitals are prepared for heat-related illnesses, stocking essential medicines and supplies. Citizens are urged to avoid going out during peak heat hours and stay hydrated. Vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and outdoor workers, are particularly advised to take extra precautions.
Meteorological forecasts indicate a slight dip in maximum temperatures by 1-2°C in the past 24 hours due to active weather systems. Light rainfall with thunder and lightning is expected, with Pune anticipating partly cloudy skies and a marginal temperature drop over the next few days.
