Maharashtra Strike Suspended: Written Assurances on Pension Demands Promised.
25 Apr
Summary
- Statewide government employee strike suspended after four days of protest.
- Nurses strike at Sassoon General Hospital impacted hundreds of surgeries.
- Government promised written assurances on demands within 15 days.

After four days, the indefinite strike by Maharashtra government and semi-government employees was suspended on Friday evening, April 25, 2026. The protest had disrupted services at state-run institutions, notably Sassoon General Hospital, where around 700 nurses joined the stir. Long-standing demands for the Old Pension Scheme and an increased retirement age to 60 were central to the protest.
Discussions with state authorities, including the chief secretary, led the Maharashtra State Government Employees Confederation to call off the strike temporarily. Nurses Association president Pragya Gaikwad stated that the government has committed to providing written assurances regarding the demands within the next 15 days. Employees plan to resume work while awaiting these formal guarantees.
The four-day strike had severely impacted Sassoon General Hospital, a major tertiary care facility. Hundreds of planned surgeries and new admissions were postponed, forcing many patients to seek private healthcare options. While striking nurses continued to attend to emergency services, general ward patients and those requiring planned procedures faced significant delays. Efforts to mitigate the impact, such as deploying nursing students and requesting staff from other centers, proved insufficient to fully meet the hospital's daily demands.
