Snakebite Deaths Now 'Notifiable Disease' in Maharashtra
20 Aug
Summary
- Snakebite deaths are now classified as a notifiable disease in Maharashtra.
- All hospitals and medical practitioners must report snakebite cases.
- This aims to improve monitoring, treatment, and ASV vaccine availability.

In a significant public health update, Maharashtra's Public Health Department has officially declared deaths caused by snakebites as a 'notifiable disease.' This new regulation requires all medical facilities, including government and private hospitals and medical colleges, as well as individual medical practitioners, to report every snakebite case, whether suspected, probable, or confirmed. The initiative, spearheaded by State Public Health Minister Prakash Abitkar, aims to establish a robust system for tracking snakebite incidents.
Information on snakebite cases will be systematically recorded in the Health Management Information System or other government-specified platforms. This data collection is crucial for effective monitoring, timely intervention, and strategic planning for the availability of Anti-Snake Venom Vaccine (ASV). The decision was prompted by a recent snakebite tragedy at a tribal residential school in Gadchiroli district, where three schoolgirls lost their lives.
To ensure efficient implementation, the Director (Hospitals) at the state level and District Surgeons and District Health Officers at the district level will serve as Snakebite Nodal Officers. This nodal mechanism will extend to municipal areas as well. The collected data will be instrumental in identifying high-incidence areas, allowing for better distribution of ASV and the development of targeted awareness campaigns on prevention, first aid, and prompt treatment.
