The Maharashtra government is poised to launch a new ambulance policy, mandating real-time digital monitoring for all registered emergency vehicles. This initiative, announced by Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, aims to significantly improve the efficiency and accountability of emergency medical services throughout Maharashtra. The proposed Maharashtra State Ambulance Policy will cover everything from registration and dispatch to fare regulation and hospital integration.
Currently, over 1,000 ambulances operate under a public-private project, alongside thousands more managed by private entities. However, a lack of unified systems has made it difficult for citizens to access crucial information about ambulance availability, location, and costs. To address this, the government is developing an integrated digital platform with distinct applications for citizens, drivers, onboard paramedics, and regulatory authorities.
The citizen-facing app will allow users to locate, track, and estimate the arrival time of the nearest ambulance, alongside fare information. Paramedics will utilize tablet-based systems to record patient data and communicate with hospitals. A central dashboard will provide authorities with real-time operational status, performance metrics, and potential misuse alerts for all registered ambulances.
To ensure fair pricing, private operators will be required to display their fare charts, with maximum fares set according to national classifications. Each trip will generate a digital record and electronic receipt, promoting transparency. The policy also introduces a digital first-aid guidance system to assist bystanders during emergencies, emphasizing the critical role of immediate response in patient survival.
