Summary
- Court demands government fill medical staff vacancies.
- RTI reveals critical shortages in equipment and personnel.
- Inadequate healthcare risks patient safety and strains staff.

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has mandated that the State provide a response regarding a public interest litigation focused on addressing critical shortages within government medical college hospitals. This action stems from a petition highlighting substantial vacancies for doctors, nurses, and support staff, as well as insufficient medical equipment such as ventilators and haemodialysis machines.
Information obtained through Right to Information (RTI) applications revealed widespread and persistent deficits in staffing and equipment. The petitioner cited a Supreme Court ruling affirming the State's constitutional duty to ensure adequate healthcare infrastructure and functional life-saving equipment. The current situation in these hospitals demonstrates a failure to meet essential public health service obligations.
The significant number of unfilled positions and non-functional medical devices poses a considerable risk to patients seeking treatment. Furthermore, these deficiencies exacerbate the workload and mental strain on the dedicated medical professionals. Consequently, patients are often compelled to seek care from private healthcare providers, incurring additional expenses.
The Division Bench, comprising Justices C.V. Karthikeyan and R. Sakthivel, has set October 6 for the next hearing on this matter.
