25 May
Summary
- President Lula is undergoing preventive radiation for skin cancer.
- He had a basal cell lesion removed on April 24.
- The 80-year-old leader will continue his daily activities.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is undergoing preventive radiation therapy after being diagnosed with early-stage skin cancer. Doctors at Sirio-Libanes Hospital announced on Monday that the 80-year-old leader will receive superficial radiotherapy on his scalp.
This treatment follows the removal of a basal cell lesion on April 24. A spokesperson for the presidency confirmed the "small" lesion was diagnosed as early-stage cancer, necessitating 15 radiotherapy sessions to prevent further occurrences. Despite the treatment, Lula is expected to continue his daily activities without any restrictions.
This health development comes as Lula is preparing to run for a fourth non-consecutive term in October. He is Brazil's oldest sitting president and has faced previous health issues, including emergency surgeries in 2024 and treatment for throat cancer in 2011.
