Early Mosquito Season Prompts Disease Alert in Ludhiana
12 Mar
Summary
- Ludhiana health department begins early measures against vector-borne diseases.
- Last year saw highest malaria cases in a decade; dengue also a concern.
- Shortage of health workers poses a challenge for disease prevention efforts.

The Ludhiana health department has launched proactive measures against vector-borne diseases, spurred by unusually warm weather and the state health department's directive. These steps are being taken earlier than usual, as the current weather conditions are conducive to rapid mosquito breeding.
Last year, Ludhiana experienced a significant surge in malaria cases, reporting 128 instances and one fatality, alongside 538 dengue cases and one death. Consequently, intensified awareness campaigns targeting migrant populations and daily fever surveys are being conducted. One dengue case has already been reported this year in a district village.
Despite the proactive stance, the health department faces considerable manpower shortages. With only 17-18 multi-purpose health workers for city-wide mosquito breeding checks where at least 100 are needed, the department has requested 300 breeding checkers. This scarcity poses a significant challenge to effective disease control efforts.
