Neighborhood Health Facilities Struggle Without Doctors, Patients Suffer
16 Nov, 2025
Summary
- Several urban health centers in Lucknow have no doctors, leaving staff to manage alone
- Shortage of doctors forces patients to visit larger hospitals for care
- Rural mother and child wings unable to provide full services due to lack of medical staff

As of November 16th, 2025, Lucknow's major hospitals remain crowded, but several neighborhood-level health facilities are functioning without a single doctor. State health department officials have revealed that at least 8 urban health and wellness centers (UHWCs) and 8 urban community health centers (UCHCs) currently have no doctors, leaving allied and healthcare staff to single-handedly manage outpatient services and distribute medicines to patients.
The shortage of doctors has had a significant impact on the city's healthcare system. In the absence of medical professionals, pharmacists and nurses are attending to patients, providing medicines, and advising them to visit larger government hospitals. This has led to a constant shuffling of patients between different centers, as they struggle to access the care they need closer to home.
The situation is particularly dire in Lucknow's rural areas, where several newly created mother and child wings at community health centers remain unable to start full services. The lack of doctors, nurses, and essential equipment has restricted these wings to outpatient and immunization services only, depriving pregnant women and newborns of the comprehensive care they require.
The Chief Medical Officer, Dr. NB Singh, has acknowledged the issue and stated that the recruitment process for the vacant posts is scheduled to begin next month. However, until these positions are filled, the city's neighborhood-level health facilities will continue to face significant challenges in providing adequate medical care to their communities.
