Potassium-Rich Salt: A Lifesaver for India?
20 Apr
Summary
- Indians consume nearly double the WHO recommended daily salt intake.
- Experts advocate potassium-enriched salt substitutes for hypertension.
- Switching to low-sodium substitutes can prevent millions of deaths.

Indians are consuming 8 to 11 grams of salt daily, nearly twice the World Health Organization's recommended limit of 5 grams. This excessive intake is a primary driver of hypertension and cardiovascular disease, major causes of mortality in India.
Leading medical and public health experts are advocating for the widespread adoption of potassium-enriched low-sodium salt substitutes (LSSS). These substitutes, comprising about 70-75% sodium chloride and 25-30% potassium chloride, reduce sodium intake while boosting potassium consumption.
Experts describe LSSS as a "dietary vaccine" and a "low-hanging fruit" for managing hypertension. They emphasize that LSSS offers passive, 24/7 cardiovascular protection without compromising the taste of traditional meals. High-quality research, including trials in rural India and China, has demonstrated significant reductions in blood pressure, stroke, major cardiovascular events, and overall mortality.
While potassium is generally safe, individuals with advanced kidney disease or high potassium levels require caution. However, experts believe nearly 90% of the population can safely benefit with clear advisories and awareness. Furthermore, integrating LSSS into public procurement programs for school meals and ration distribution, along with food industry reformulation policies, could significantly scale its adoption and impact.
