Louisiana WIC Goes Digital: New Card for Easier Access

Louisiana has modernized its Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) special supplemental nutrition program by introducing a new benefits card.
Starting August 1, 2026, this card will be the primary method for distributing food assistance, replacing the previous requirement for in-person visits every three months. Officials can now upload benefits remotely, enhancing convenience and accessibility.
Louisiana Health Secretary Bruce Greenstein stated this long-awaited change makes the program more responsive to families' needs. The WIC program serves low-income individuals who are pregnant, nursing, or postpartum, and provides food assistance for infants and children up to age five.
Participants started receiving their new cards in June. The cards are usable at grocery stores beginning Saturday, July 1st, 2026. A numeric passcode must be set up before shopping. Benefits are restricted to specific food items like formula, baby food, fruits, vegetables, and certain dairy and protein options.
