A service of reflection was held at St James's University Hospital in Leeds, marking six years since the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic. The event honored NHS workers and acknowledged those affected by the virus, offering a chance for reflection on sacrifices made.
This occasion highlighted the ongoing impact of long Covid, a condition affecting an estimated 1.9 million people across the UK. Sufferers contend with over 200 symptoms and currently no cure, leading many to describe their experience as living in "complete limbo."
Patients like Fran Haddock, who has lived with long Covid for three years, shared their challenges. Despite a slight improvement, she remains largely bed-bound, emphasizing the uncertainty of her future and the need for greater awareness.
Clinical lead Jenny Davison noted that long Covid sufferers are often an "invisible cohort." She explained that treatments focus on symptom management to improve quality of life, but stressed the urgent need for more research and a cure.
The event, organized by NHS Charities Together, included readings, music, and a memory tree. It precedes the national Day of Reflection on March 8th, inviting people to commemorate the day meaningfully.
Healthcare professionals like Dr. Elizabeth Garthwaite recalled the difficult frontline experiences during the pandemic, including providing emotional support to patients and families amid strict visiting restrictions. NHS Charities Together has supported over one million staff with counseling and rest areas, and assisted more than 600,000 patients in accessing better care.
