Miracle Liver Transplant Connects Two Families
28 Aug
Summary
- A young girl received a life-saving liver transplant.
- An anonymous donor and recipient families forged a friendship.
- The donor found the recipient through a social media post.
Lillian Ipana, now three years old, was born with biliary atresia, a serious liver condition requiring a transplant. Her family, previously residing in Inuvik, N.W.T., searched for a donor, eventually finding one anonymously. Lillian's life-saving transplant surgery occurred in July 2024, and she is now living in Edmonton and recovering well.
Remarkably, the donor, Carmin Boskill from North Battleford, Sask., was able to meet Lillian and her mother, Meghan Ipana. Boskill, a former nurse, had decided to become an organ donor years prior. She unexpectedly learned of Lillian's situation through a Facebook post, realizing she was the anonymous match.
The families were formally introduced by the organ donation program. Boskill traveled to Edmonton to meet them, describing an immediate, profound connection. Ipana credited Boskill with saving her daughter's life, while Boskill expressed immense gratitude for the experience. The two women have since developed a regular contact and anticipate future visits.
