Liver Disease Surges 5x: Is It Linked to Your Habits?
27 Aug
Summary
- MASLD cases increased five-fold in the last decade.
- Overweight, diabetic, and older adults are at higher risk.
- A significant diagnostic gap persists in the UK.

Cases of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), previously known as fatty liver disease, have seen a dramatic five-fold increase in the UK over the last ten years. This condition, characterized by fat buildup in the liver and strongly associated with type 2 diabetes and obesity, is now diagnosed in 2.4% of adults, a significant jump from 0.02% a decade prior.
Despite this rise, a substantial diagnostic gap persists, with current UK prevalence still falling short of expected rates. Researchers highlight that individuals who are overweight, inactive, have type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or are over 50 are at increased risk. South Asian individuals are also disproportionately affected, yet less likely to have measures for liver scarring assessed.
Experts emphasize the urgent need for improved public health strategies to identify and manage at-risk groups actively. The development of blood tests to estimate liver scarring presents an opportunity for earlier detection. Addressing this growing health concern is crucial to mitigate compounding health disparities.
