Misdiagnosed Lipoedema: A Teen's Painful Journey
17 Mar
Summary
- A teen's leg swelling and pain were initially dismissed as body fat.
- Lipoedema, an inflammatory disease, causes abnormal fat deposits.
- NHS does not fund essential liposuction treatment abroad.

Bella Mansfield, now 18, endured years of debilitating leg pain and swelling, initially attributed to puberty and later dismissed by a GP as being related to body fat. The misdiagnosis delayed the identification of lipoedema, a progressive inflammatory condition where abnormal fat cells accumulate under the skin, most commonly affecting the thighs and legs. This condition causes significant pain, disproportionate body shape, and can severely impact quality of life.
Bella described constant stabbing pains and tenderness in her legs, leading her to avoid social situations during warmer months. Her mother, Amanda, grew concerned by Bella's shifting body proportions and persistent discomfort. Despite Bella's active lifestyle, including swimming and gym visits, the GP suggested attending a weight loss program. A subsequent specialist referral led to a swift diagnosis of lipoedema.
The family discovered that while an estimated 10% of adult women in the UK are affected by lipoedema, the NHS does not offer crucial water-assisted liposuction treatment. This has led them to explore expensive international clinics, with costs potentially reaching £10,000 per trip for surgery. Amanda has initiated a GoFundMe to cover these expenses, expressing frustration at the lack of government support for a condition primarily affecting women.
