Lilly's Obesity Drug Shows Major Weight Loss

Eli Lilly announced positive results from two Phase 3 trials for its experimental obesity drug, retatrutide. This drug is designed to target three crucial metabolic hormones: GLP-1, GIP, and glucagon.
An 80-week trial involving adults with severe obesity and existing heart disease showed an average weight loss of 22.6% with the highest weekly dose of retatrutide. Separately, a trial with overweight or obese patients with type 2 diabetes achieved a 20.8% average weight loss and improved A1C levels by 1.6% with the highest dose.
The most frequently reported side effects in both studies were nausea and diarrhea. Lilly intends to submit a biologics license application for retatrutide to the U.S. FDA in the first quarter of 2027.
This move follows previous announcements of significant weight loss in other patient populations and positive impacts on conditions like knee osteoarthritis pain and obstructive sleep apnea. Full trial results are slated for publication in medical journals.
