30 Sep
Summary
- New combo drug EloraTZP showed greater weight loss than Zepbound.
- EloraTZP also improved blood sugar levels significantly.
- Late-stage trials for EloraTZP are planned for Q4 2026.
Eli Lilly's experimental combination weight-loss drug, EloraTZP, has demonstrated superior efficacy compared to its current blockbuster, Zepbound, in a head-to-head mid-stage trial. Patients receiving the highest tested dose of EloraTZP, a combination of tirzepatide and eloralintide, achieved an average body weight loss of 23.3% over 48 weeks. This significantly surpassed the 14.8% weight loss observed in patients on the highest dose of Zepbound.
Beyond weight reduction, EloraTZP also showed promising results in improving glycemic control, lowering A1C levels by up to 2.9%, compared to 2.4% with tirzepatide alone. While gastrointestinal side effects were more frequent in the combination arms, Eli Lilly indicated plans to refine dose escalation schedules for future late-stage trials. The company intends to commence late-stage studies for EloraTZP in the fourth quarter of 2026, further fueling competition in the burgeoning obesity therapy market.
