14 Mar
Summary
- A marathon runner collapsed with two cardiac arrests and no pulse.
- Bystanders, including two doctors, used a Tesco defibrillator to save him.
- He has since recovered, run marathons, and raised funds for his treatment.

Grant Williams, a 54-year-old fitness instructor, experienced a life-threatening event during a marathon training run in Liverpool. He collapsed on Smithdown Road, suffering two cardiac arrests and losing consciousness for eight minutes.
Fortunately, a doctor returning from a night shift and another nearby medical professional quickly intervened. Friends retrieved a defibrillator from a local Tesco, enabling the doctors to resuscitate Williams on the scene. He has no memory of the incident, only waking up in the hospital.
Following his recovery, which included a quadruple heart bypass, Williams set two goals: to thank his rescuers and raise funds for his treatment unit. He was reunited with Dr. Mel Hamilton and Dr. Joe Clarkson, the medics who saved him.
Williams is now back to running and has completed marathons in his hometown and Manchester. He recently participated in a Liverpool half-marathon, an event that also served as a significant fundraising week for him. He fondly remembers the community spirit shown by strangers on Smithdown Road, who provided support and comfort after his collapse.
