Leukemia Symptoms: Don't Ignore These Signs
18 Oct
Summary
- Leukemia symptoms are vague and often mistaken for common illnesses.
- Early diagnosis significantly improves outcomes and treatment options.
- Both young adults and older individuals can be diagnosed with leukemia.

Leukemia, a form of blood cancer, can affect individuals of any age, with symptoms often mistaken for everyday ailments. Two women, Dora Winslet, 61, and Rowan Bland, 28, shared their journeys, underscoring the importance of recognizing subtle signs.
Dora noticed blood on her pillow and blisters in her mouth in late 2020, leading to a diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in January 2021. Nearly 2,700 people are diagnosed with AML annually in the UK, with a survival rate of less than five years for many.
Rowan, a student, developed blood blisters, bruising, and fatigue, initially diagnosed with tonsillitis in February 2025. Her condition worsened, leading to an April 2025 diagnosis of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), a rarer subtype of AML.
Symptoms such as persistent fatigue, unexplained bruising, bleeding, recurrent infections, and night sweats are common but non-specific. Experts stress that nearly 30% of blood cancer patients in England and Northern Ireland are diagnosed via emergency hospital visits.
Both women underwent intensive treatments, including chemotherapy and stem cell transplants, facing severe complications. Their experiences highlight the critical need for timely diagnosis, as delayed detection can lead to fewer treatment options and poorer prognoses.
