Hospice Reopens Beds with Vital NHS Funding Boost
16 Mar
Summary
- Hospice beds reduced last year due to rising costs.
- Additional NHS funding of £1.2m has been awarded.
- The funding will support bed provision and community care.

LOROS Hospice in Leicester is experiencing a positive turn with the reopening of additional inpatient beds, made possible by a substantial £1.2 million funding award from the NHS. This increased investment aims to bolster the hospice's capacity to provide specialist palliative and end-of-life care.
Previously, the hospice faced significant financial challenges, necessitating a reduction in its inpatient bed count from 31 to 18 last summer. This decision was attributed to escalating running costs and a considerable budget deficit, which also impacted other patient services. The recent funding, provided by the integrated care board for Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland, represents a crucial vote of confidence in LOROS's vital role.
While the current funding secures the reopening of several beds and strengthens the hospice's integration into community-based care models, LOROS remains focused on its goal of reopening the remaining seven beds. This expansion is contingent on continued community support and donations. The hospice leadership expressed gratitude for the NHS's recognition of their work and the unwavering generosity of the community.
