Basel Battles Deadly Legionnaires' Outbreak
3 Aug
Summary
- Twenty-six people fell ill, with one fatality, in Basel.
- Cooling towers of an office block are suspected sources.
- High levels of legionella bacterium were found in two cooling facilities.

An outbreak of Legionnaires' disease has affected Basel, with 26 individuals falling ill and one person tragically losing their life. The city's health department is actively investigating the cause, with preliminary findings strongly suggesting that the cooling towers of an office block are the source of the infection. High levels of legionella pneumophila, the bacterium responsible for most human infections, were discovered in samples from two cooling facilities located on the office building's roof.
These identified cooling towers were promptly shut down on Friday and are currently being refurbished as part of the containment efforts. Of the 26 confirmed cases, 25 required hospitalization, with seven initially needing intensive care. While most patients have since been released, nine remain hospitalized, including one in intensive care. Basel's health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and urge residents experiencing pneumonia-like symptoms, such as fever and shortness of breath, to consult their doctor.
