Don't Ignore Leg Pain: It Could Be PAD
7 Jun
Summary
- Persistent leg pain may indicate Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD).
- Classic PAD symptom is calf pain during walking, easing with rest.
- Vascular disease risk is elevated by diabetes, hypertension, and smoking.

Many people overlook persistent leg pain, attributing it to aging or inactivity. However, such discomfort can signal Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD), a condition where arteries in the legs narrow due to plaque buildup.
The hallmark of PAD is a cramping or aching sensation in the legs or buttocks that consistently appears with walking and subsides upon resting. As the condition worsens, pain may even occur at rest, particularly in the feet and toes overnight.
Reduced blood flow can manifest as one leg feeling colder, wounds healing slowly, or changes in skin color, indicating insufficient oxygen supply to tissues. This vascular disease often coexists with other systemic conditions, including heart and kidney issues.
Prevalent health issues in India, such as elevated blood pressure, high blood sugar, rising obesity, and widespread tobacco use, contribute to increased vascular disease risk. These factors, compounded by age, damage blood vessels.
Sudden leg swelling, warmth, redness, or tenderness can indicate Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), a serious condition where a blood clot may travel to the lungs, posing a life-threatening risk.
Early detection through non-invasive tests like Doppler ultrasound and Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) is crucial. Treatment varies from lifestyle changes and medication to minimally invasive procedures like angioplasty or surgical bypass, aiming to alleviate symptoms, improve mobility, and prevent future cardiovascular events.
Regular check-ups and vascular health evaluations are advisable for individuals at risk. Structured exercise and medication can help manage disease progression.
