A beloved 100-year-old farmhouse in Crystal Lake, serving as the Last Chance House and a halfway home for recovering alcoholics, was tragically destroyed by an accidental fire in March 2024. Although the cause remains unknown, the entire structure was engulfed in flames within minutes, making the safe evacuation of all individuals inside a miracle.
Despite the devastation, the organization is committed to its mission. Construction on a new, 2,300-square-foot facility commenced last fall. This new house will provide temporary accommodation for up to ten recovering alcoholics, offering them a supportive environment for four to six months as they transition back to independent living, provided they maintain sobriety and employment.
The rebuilding process has been challenging, with insurance not fully covering the costs. However, ongoing fundraising efforts are crucial. With exterior walls now complete, interior work can continue through the winter. The community anticipates the new Last Chance House will be ready to open its doors by late spring of 2026.
