Summary
- Laser-assisted surgery shows promise for challenging white intumescent cataracts.
- Laser capsulotomies offer precision and tear resistance in complex cases.
- Study involved eye specialists from UK, Bulgaria, Saudi Arabia, and India.

A significant multicentre study involving the National Institute of Ophthalmology (NIO) in Pune, alongside specialists from the United Kingdom, Bulgaria, and Saudi Arabia, has been published. The research, featured in the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery, focuses on the effectiveness of laser-assisted surgery for managing complex cataract cases. Specifically, the study evaluated "Selective laser capsulotomy for intumescent cataracts," examining its safety and efficacy in patients with white intumescent cataracts.
This advanced form of cataract can present considerable challenges for conventional surgical methods. Dr. Jai Kelkar explained that manually creating an opening in the lens capsule, a crucial step, is difficult with intumescent cataracts due to high internal pressure, which can cause complications. Laser-assisted procedures address this by performing this critical step in fractions of a second, thereby significantly reducing the risk of adverse outcomes even in difficult scenarios.
The study's findings indicate that capsulotomies created by lasers are highly precise, predictable, and less prone to tearing. These characteristics make them an invaluable tool for treating advanced cataracts. Dr. Aditya Kelkar expressed pride in the publication, calling it a milestone for NIO and its collaborators, and expressed hope that these findings will inspire further innovation and the adoption of advanced technologies for complex cataract surgeries.
