A year-long celebration is commencing on Sunday, October 11, 2026, to honor the centenary of the late K.V. Thiruvengadam, a distinguished clinician, teacher, and humanitarian. His impact on medicine in Chennai and beyond will be commemorated by focusing on core principles: attentive patient listening, thorough bedside examinations, thoughtful consideration before tests, and the essence of being a good physician amidst technological advancements.
Born in 1926, KVT, as he was known, dedicated 31 years to teaching at Government Stanley Medical College and Madras Medical College. His expertise lay in chest medicine, allergies, and infectious diseases. Students remember his emphasis on bedside examination as a method of thinking and understanding patients, rather than mere routine.
Professor Thiruvengadam was both a scientist and a clinician, publishing nearly 100 papers and researching areas like chikungunya fever. He believed in medicine as a social responsibility, serving the poor within the government system with a willingness to serve. His accolades included the Padma Shri in 1981 and the Dr. B.C. Roy Award.
The centenary objective is to infuse his philosophy into medical education, advocating for technology used with context and prioritizing human clinical reasoning. This initiative highlights the importance of history-taking, clinical examination, and reasoning in diagnosis, management, and research. On October 31, the third Prof. K.V. Thiruvengadam Memorial Oration will be held at Sree Balaji Medical College and Hospital.
