Work on a proposed Institute of Organ and Tissue Transplantation in Kozhikode is slated for completion within 30 months. Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan announced the project, which has an allocation of ₹271 crore and will occupy a 20-acre plot. The institute aims to centralize all organ transplantation services, projecting a reduction in surgery costs by one-third. It will feature 350 beds and 10 operation theatres, alongside a proposed dermatology hospital costing ₹35 crore.
The facility is envisioned as a center of excellence, incorporating a research program. It is projected to perform a substantial number of transplants annually, including cornea, kidney, heart, lung, liver, and others. The government plans to leverage Kerala's advantages to establish it as a significant healthcare destination for both domestic and international patients, offering comprehensive wellness and rehabilitation services.
The foundation stone for this ambitious project was laid in February of this year. However, the development has reportedly experienced a slow pace since the change in government, despite the commitment to expedite its completion and transform the state's healthcare landscape.
