Kolkata Heatwave Sparks Viral Outbreak

A sharp increase in temperature over the past three days has led to a notable rise in viral infections across Kolkata. Hospitals have seen a surge in patients presenting with symptoms of heat fatigue and exhaustion. Common illnesses include influenza A, B, and para-influenza, with some facilities also reporting cases of viral diarrhoea.

Doctors attribute the outbreak to sudden temperature fluctuations and the proliferation of viruses in warmer ambient conditions. Individuals with weakened immunity, particularly the elderly, diabetics, cancer patients, and those on steroids, are more susceptible. While most cases are mild and treated in outpatient departments, some patients have developed pneumonia requiring admission.

Health experts emphasize the importance of early symptom recognition, staying hydrated, maintaining hand hygiene, and avoiding high-risk environments. These measures are crucial for mitigating the spread of infections during this period of weather transition.
