West Bengal Health Minister Sharadwat Mukherjee has called for support from the Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee (DMSC) to facilitate cervical cancer vaccination for sex workers in Kolkata's Sonagachi red-light district. On July 12, 2026, during the DMSC's 31st anniversary, the minister highlighted the community's vulnerability to cervical cancer and pledged the Health and Family Welfare Department's readiness to provide free Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccinations. The DMSC is asked to assist in gathering details of sex workers to ensure an organized vaccination rollout. This initiative aligns with the Central government's budget announcement to offer free HPV vaccines to all 14-year-old girls nationwide. The minister also committed to installing free condom vending machines in Sonagachi, urging sex workers to mandate condom use with clients. The event also celebrated the academic achievements of 25 children from the community and recognized elderly sex workers. Representatives from DMSC and the UNDP praised the organization's three decades of work in advocating for sex workers' rights and dignity.
