A late monsoon warm spell has triggered an unusual outbreak of heat-induced diseases in Kolkata. Over the past four to five days, residents have sought treatment for conditions such as heat exhaustion, dizziness, nausea, and blackouts, which are uncommon during the monsoon season.
Doctors note that these temperature fluctuations are exacerbating existing viral infections. Patients are presenting with severe weakness, diarrhea, fever, and muscle pain, often experiencing relapses after initial recovery. The sudden warmth is reactivating viruses and leading to prolonged periods of fatigue and dehydration.
Hospitals are observing a significant increase in patients with fever, sore throat, persistent cough, nasal congestion, wheezing, and shortness of breath. While most cases are manageable, some individuals, particularly those with underlying respiratory conditions like COPD, have required hospitalization.
Physicians warn that dehydration-induced drowsiness can occur even at home and may be an early sign of heat exhaustion or, with prolonged sun exposure, could lead to heatstroke. The fluctuating temperature and humidity create conditions conducive to the spread of viral infections and can worsen respiratory symptoms.
