A significant medical breakthrough occurred at NRS Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata, where doctors successfully conducted a haploidentical bone marrow transplant. The procedure was performed on a 32-year-old patient diagnosed with severe aplastic anemia.
Brajagopal Kamilya, from Midnapore, was experiencing severe symptoms including generalized weakness and fatigue, requiring frequent blood transfusions. Initial evaluations pointed to a critical condition where his bone marrow was failing to produce sufficient blood cells.
Medical professionals advised an allogenic transplant, but a fully matched donor was unavailable. The stem cells from his 44-year-old brother, who served as the donor, were found to be only half-matched (5/10). This type of transplant, known as a Haplo-transplant, presents considerable challenges due to potential HLA gene mismatches.
Despite these difficulties, a specialized team, led by haematology professor Sandeep Saha, executed the complex procedure. The patient is now recovering well and anticipates a future free from blood transfusions, highlighting the success of this advanced medical intervention.
