Unforgivable: Knee Replacement Surgeries Postponed
1 Dec
Summary
- Cancelled knee surgeries cost the NHS over £15.5 million.
- A quarter of cancellations occurred less than 24 hours prior.
- Patients suffer significant personal and emotional costs from delays.

Academics have branded the cancellation of knee replacement surgeries as "unforgivable" following a study that highlights substantial financial losses for the NHS and considerable hardship for patients. The research, conducted across six hospitals over five years, identified that nearly half of the 17,223 knee replacement operations were cancelled, with a quarter occurring less than 24 hours before.
This pattern of short-notice cancellations results in significant financial waste, estimated at over £15.5 million due to lost tariffs averaging between £6,500 and £11,000 per procedure. Beyond the economic implications, the study emphasizes the profound personal cost to patients, who often rearrange their lives and face emotional distress when operations are postponed at the "11th hour."
Efforts are underway to address this issue, with the NHS reporting an increase in knee replacement procedures and the establishment of surgical hubs to improve efficiency. However, the findings underscore a critical need to prevent avoidable cancellations, supporting patients through long waiting periods and ensuring timely relief from pain and immobility.
