Knee Pain Relief: Daily Fiber Supplement Shows Promise
13 Mar
Summary
- Prebiotic fiber inulin may reduce osteoarthritis knee pain.
- Supplement improved grip strength and pain sensitivity.
- Higher GLP-1 hormone levels linked to better muscle function.

A daily dose of the prebiotic fiber inulin, found naturally in vegetables like chicory root, shows potential for alleviating pain and improving strength in people with knee osteoarthritis. This discovery comes from a University of Nottingham study published in Nutrients, offering a dietary alternative to traditional pain medications and physiotherapy.
The INSPIRE trial involved 117 adults with knee osteoarthritis, randomly assigned to receive inulin, physiotherapy, a combination, or a placebo for six weeks. Results indicated that inulin independently reduced knee pain and also led to improvements in grip strength and reduced pain sensitivity.
Furthermore, participants consuming the daily fiber supplement exhibited increased levels of the hormone GLP-1, which is associated with better muscle function and pain regulation. This suggests a potential gut-muscle connection influenced by prebiotic fiber, warranting further investigation into its broader implications for aging and physical resilience.
While inulin alone did not improve sit-to-stand performance, it significantly boosted grip strength by approximately 4.6kg compared to the placebo group. Experts from Arthritis UK welcomed the findings, emphasizing the combined importance of diet, including fiber, and regular physical activity for managing arthritis.
