According to the latest research, one in ten people is currently experiencing persistent constipation, a condition that can significantly impact their quality of life. As of November 16th, 2025, the National Health Service (NHS) defines constipation as having fewer than three bowel movements per week or going less frequently than normal.
Experts like Dr. Eirini Dimidi from King's College London are now providing guidance on how to tackle this widespread problem through simple dietary changes. They recommend eating two to three kiwi fruits every day, as the fruit's fiber and water content can stimulate bowel contractions and soften stools. Additionally, consuming eight to ten prunes and some rye bread as a daily snack can have a comparable effect.
Beyond fruits and grains, the research also highlights the benefits of magnesium supplements and mineral water. Magnesium oxide supplements, in particular, can help alleviate lower abdominal pain, bloating, and straining associated with constipation, while also facilitating bowel movements. Experts suggest that this more diet-focused and evidence-based approach marks a promising step towards empowering both healthcare professionals and patients to manage chronic constipation.
