A dedicated team has scaled Africa's highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro, raising more than £23,000 for Les Bourgs Hospice. This significant achievement was completed in tribute to Rose Haysom, who passed away in February 2025 at the age of 26 following a diagnosis of stage four stomach cancer.
Her father, Steve, and sister, Lily, were part of the five-person group that conquered the 19,341ft (5,895m) summit. The challenging eight-day ascent concluded on September 20, which would have marked Rose's 28th birthday.
The family expressed a strong desire to support the hospice staff and volunteers who provided Rose with comfort during her final week. Steve described the climb as arduous but rewarding, focusing on placing "one foot in front of the other" for eight days.
Lily shared that completing the climb in Rose's memory was deeply meaningful, especially sharing the experience with her father. Rose's resilience and vibrant outlook on life, documented on Instagram, served as a profound inspiration for the team's motivation.
Her family highlighted how Rose's "strength, courage and attitude to life" fueled their determination. They also emphasized that the care at Les Bourgs Hospice allowed them to cherish her final moments, knowing she was as comfortable as possible.
