Palliative Care Reaches Homes: Kidwai Institute's Compassionate Outreach
10 Oct
Summary
- Kidwai Institute's palliative care extends to homes, serving over 3,000 beneficiaries.
- Home visits are crucial for patients facing mobility issues and advanced illness.
- Bereavement support is provided to families navigating grief after a loved one's death.

The Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology (KMIO) is significantly extending its palliative care services to reach patients in their homes. This initiative, highlighted on World Hospice and Palliative Care Day, has resulted in over 750 home-care visits and benefited more than 3,000 individuals, including patients and their caregivers.
These home-based services are particularly important for patients with advanced cancer and life-limiting illnesses who face challenges in hospital visits due to their condition. Multidisciplinary teams deliver medical assessments, manage symptoms, and offer nursing care within the comfort of familiar surroundings, easing the burden on families.
Recognizing that serious illness affects entire families, KMIO's palliative care also encompasses support for caregivers dealing with practical, emotional, and financial pressures. The department further extends its services to include bereavement support, guiding families through grief and emotional distress following the loss of a loved one.
Additionally, the institute offers inpatient palliative care for complex symptom management, including specialized pain relief interventions for severe cancer-related pain. Paediatric palliative care is also provided, with age-appropriate support for children and their families. Complementary therapies like music, sound, and yoga are offered to enhance well-being. For those in remote locations, a teleconsultation service connects patients with specialist palliative care teams.
World Hospice and Palliative Care Day, observed on October 10, focused on 'Pain management: An essential part of palliative care.' This aligns with KMIO's comprehensive approach to addressing physical, psychological, emotional, social, and spiritual needs.
