The Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology has been awarded the ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management System certification for its Solid Waste Management (SWM) facility. This makes Kidwai one of the few hospitals nationwide recognized for adhering to stringent international environmental standards, reinforcing its dedication to eco-friendly practices.
The SWM facility, established under a 10-year Build-Own-Operate-Transfer model, began operations after infrastructure completion by December 2020 and trial runs in January 2021. It features a one-tonne-per-day biogas plant that processes food and garden waste, producing purified biogas used to generate electricity for the facility and charge campus electric vehicles.
From January 2021 to November 2025, the facility successfully managed over 10.89 lakh kg of food waste and 2.80 lakh kg of garden waste, diverting them from landfills. Compost from this process enriches the campus's greenery. The institute also focused on staff training for scientific waste segregation, underscoring a comprehensive approach to environmental responsibility.
