King George's Medical University (KGMU) is developing a state-of-the-art 500-bed apex centre dedicated to women and newborn care. This ambitious project, approved by the state government, is designed to consolidate specialized treatment for high-risk cases, including pregnancies and neonatal emergencies, into a single facility.
The multi-storey centre will feature advanced medical infrastructure, including dedicated floors for reproductive medicine, fetal medicine, minimally invasive surgery, and various intensive care units (NICU, general ICU, maternal ICU). It will also house modular operation theatres equipped with advanced surgical technology.
This pioneering initiative seeks to address a significant deficiency in current neonatal care, where critically ill newborns are sometimes separated from their mothers due to space constraints. By housing both mother and child within the same centre, KGMU aims to improve patient outcomes and streamline specialized healthcare services.
Beyond high-risk pregnancies and neonatal care, the centre will offer services for breast and cervical cancer, menstrual disorders, anemia, and obesity, complemented by comprehensive diagnostic facilities. While outpatient and emergency services will continue at the existing Queen Mary's Hospital, the new centre will concentrate on complex and high-risk medical needs, positioning itself as a groundbreaking facility in Uttar Pradesh and North India.
