King George's Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow is establishing an advanced lung transplant unit, poised to deliver world-class treatment for patients suffering from severe lung diseases. This significant development was announced during AIPCON 2026, an interventional pulmonology conference hosted by KGMU.
University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Soniya Nityanand highlighted that enhancing sub-specialty services will lead to more precise and patient-focused treatment approaches. The conference proceedings, attended by former VC Prof. Ravi Kant and pulmonologist Prof. Digambar Behera, recognized India's rapid progress in interventional pulmonology and KGMU's expanding influence in this domain.
Doctors noted that the department is already proficient in diagnosing and treating lung cancer using advanced bronchoscopy and EBUS-guided investigations. Experts stressed the global impact of lung cancer deaths and the critical role of early screening and timely intervention. They identified tobacco use, air pollution, and obesity as major risk factors, advising prompt medical consultation for persistent symptoms.
Prof. Ved Prakash, the organizing secretary, stated that the conference aimed to foster skill enhancement, introduce new techniques, and promote collaboration for improved respiratory care. This initiative by KGMU signifies a major stride in providing advanced pulmonary care within the region.
