Cumbria Urgent Centre Faces Staffing Crisis
9 Mar
Summary
- The Keswick Urgent Treatment Centre closed for 29 days in six months.
- Staffing issues are due to vacancies and long-term absences.
- A more stable service is expected by May with new staff.

Keswick's Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) in Cumbria experienced 29 days of closure over the last six months of 2025, with 11 days shut in December alone. These closures were attributed to critical staffing issues, including vacancies and long-term absences within a small team.
Chief Nurse Gill Findley stated that while closures are unacceptable, they were implemented for patient safety reasons. The North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust is actively recruiting to fill these roles and expects a significantly more stable service by May 2026, once new personnel have completed their induction.
Despite the ongoing challenges, the trust has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the permanent operation of the UTC. However, the possibility of future temporary closures due to unforeseen staffing gaps has not been entirely ruled out. Local residents and tourists rely heavily on the facility, which treats injuries like sprains and minor fractures.
