Kerala's Heart Milestone: First PFA Procedure Performed
17 Jun
Summary
- Kerala performed its first Pulsed Field Ablation for atrial fibrillation.
- Metromed International Cardiac Centre led the landmark procedure.
- The new PFA technology was launched nationally on the same day.

Metromed International Cardiac Centre in Calicut successfully executed the first Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA) procedure for atrial fibrillation (AF) in Kerala on June 5, 2026. This event coincided with the national launch of PFA technology in India. Three patients suffering from paroxysmal atrial fibrillation underwent this novel treatment using the FARAPULSE™ system, performed by the hospital's electrophysiology team led by Dr. Arun Gopi.
Atrial fibrillation is a common heart rhythm disorder where the upper heart chambers beat irregularly, increasing stroke risk. Traditional treatments like radiofrequency and cryoballoon ablation use thermal energy. PFA, however, employs electrical pulses for precise cardiac cell ablation, offering a potentially safer and more efficient alternative by minimizing damage to surrounding structures.
This achievement positions Metromed as a pioneer in adopting advanced cardiac care technologies. Dr. Mohammed Musthafa, Chairman of Metromed, highlighted the institution's commitment to delivering world-class innovations promptly. The successful PFA procedures underscore the hospital's dedication to providing patients with the safest and most effective therapies available globally.
