Kerala Hospitals Get 24/7 Specialty Care Boost

The Kerala government is set to establish 24/7 specialty care facilities named 'Pratheeksha Centres' in district and general hospitals statewide. This move aims to significantly reduce the mounting pressure on medical college hospitals by providing round-the-clock services in key departments such as medicine, surgery, orthopaedics, paediatrics, and gynaecology. A trial run has commenced, with full operations expected by September 10, 2026. This initiative addresses the issue of patients overcrowding emergency departments for non-critical conditions, which often delays care for those with severe ailments.

Concurrently, the state is launching 'Hridayaragam', a community-based campaign targeting the early detection, prevention, and treatment of prevalent lifestyle diseases including diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and cancer. This campaign will pilot in select constituencies before a statewide rollout. Residents over 18 will undergo screening and risk assessment, with high-risk individuals receiving prompt access to consultations and treatment. Additionally, the state's mental health centres are being rebranded as 'Happiness and Wellness Centres' to offer expanded mental health and wellbeing services.
