Kerala Court Demands AIIMS Establishment Criteria
11 Mar
Summary
- Court seeks Centre's criterion for establishing AIIMS across states.
- The court questioned the delay in establishing AIIMS in Kerala.
- A plea was filed seeking speedy AIIMS establishment in Kasaragod.

The Kerala High Court has demanded to know the criteria the Central government uses for establishing All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in different states. The court specifically questioned why an AIIMS has not yet been established in Kerala.
This inquiry stems from a plea filed by the AIIMS Kasaragod Janakeeya Kootayma, which advocated for prompt measures to set up the institute in Kasaragod. The Centre has previously invited states to propose sites for AIIMS, with 18 states currently having the institution and four more in development.
The High Court had previously directed the Centre to conduct a feasibility study in coordination with the Kerala government to identify a suitable location for an AIIMS within the state. A Joint Secretary from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare appeared virtually before the court in response to its earlier order.
