Summary
- Public health expert appointed to study Kerala's health sector issues.
- Global investment in Kerala's private healthcare sector nears $1 billion.
- Quality healthcare is a constitutional right, says SHRC chairperson.

The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has directed the Kerala government to appoint public health expert Dr. S.S. Lal as a special monitor. This initiative aims to comprehensively study serious issues confronting the public health sector and recommend solutions. The commission expressed confidence that Dr. Lal, an internationally recognized WHO consultant, can address the healthcare sector's challenges.
The SHRC's action stems from concerns over inadequate infrastructure and media reports indicating approximately $1 billion in global investment in Kerala's private healthcare. Chairperson Justice Alexander Thomas noted that increasing reliance on private facilities, especially for middle-income groups, necessitates strengthening the public health system.
Dr. Lal is tasked with consulting state agencies and conducting an in-depth study. He is expected to submit an interim report within two months, with the support of experts from Thiruvananthapuram Medical College and the National Health Mission. The government must provide necessary facilities, and Dr. Lal will also consider suggestions from other health experts.
