Kerala Battles Multiple Disease Outbreaks

As of June 23, 2026, Kerala is grappling with a multi-pronged infectious disease challenge. Dengue cases saw a sharp increase, with 159 confirmed and 295 probable infections reported on Tuesday alone. This alarming spike suggests a potential escalation in the state's infectious disease landscape in the coming weeks, exacerbated by intermittent monsoon rains and warm spells that accelerate vector breeding.

Palakkad, Kozhikode, and Ernakulam districts reported the highest dengue case numbers. The state also recorded two dengue deaths, one confirmed in Malappuram and a probable one in Palakkad. Alongside dengue, leptospirosis continues to be reported steadily, with 22 cases and three deaths, including a probable fatality.

Respiratory diseases, including influenza A and B, RSV, and COVID-19, are circulating widely, particularly affecting senior citizens. In June, 1,569 respiratory cases and 16 deaths have been recorded. Shigellosis also remains a concern, with 15 cases reported across five districts on Tuesday. Outbreaks have been declared in Kozhikode, Wayanad, Thrissur, and Alappuzha, emphasizing the rapid household spread of this highly infectious disease.

Health officials stress that controlling these outbreaks requires stringent vector control measures and public adherence to hygiene practices, such as thorough handwashing and consuming boiled water. These actions are deemed crucial for mitigating the spread of dengue, leptospirosis, respiratory infections, and shigellosis across the state.
