Summary
- Healthcare workers involved in organ donation will receive professional fees.
- Compensation aims to ease the burden on professionals working long hours.
- Fees range from ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 for specific service durations.

The Kerala government has formally sanctioned a proposal to remunerate various healthcare professionals for their involvement in deceased donor organ donation and transplantation. This initiative will provide professional fees to specialists, technicians, and grief counsellors.
Organ donation is a complex, resource-intensive process requiring significant coordination and extended work hours from many professionals. These individuals, including intensivists, transplant surgeons, and technicians, often work 24 to 36 hours to ensure successful procedures.
Previously, professionals offered their services purely out of goodwill. Recognizing this invaluable contribution, Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (K-SOTTO) explored compensation options since 2022. The executive committee approved the fee structure in January 2024.
Professional fees will range from ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 for specified service hours. This compensation extends to ICU/OT technicians, transplant nurses, grief counsellors, and others involved in the critical stages of donation and transportation.
