A nine-year-old girl has tragically lost her right hand due to an infection that developed after she received treatment at the district hospital in Palakkad.
The Kerala High Court has intervened, directing the State government to ensure the girl receives full medical assistance and free education until she reaches the age of 21. This directive stems from the court's acknowledgment of serious medical negligence the child experienced at the hospital.
The court, presided over by Chief Justice Soumen Sen and Justice Syam Kumar V.M., also emphasized the necessity for strict adherence to standard operating procedures for fracture treatments, particularly concerning pediatric patients.
A social worker's petition highlighted that the girl was initially treated in September 2025 with a plaster cast without adequate examination, leading to infection and bleeding. Subsequent treatment at Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital resulted in amputation.
